The language of food supplements and nutrition can generally be technical or complicated. We've put together a glossary that will help you understand some of the commonest terms. You probably have ideas for further entries to the glossary, please contact us. µg Microgram a measurement of weight equal to at least one millionth of a gram (or one thousandth of a milligram). Microgram (µg or mcg) is used for a number of nutrients present in meals supplements. Amino Acid The building blocks of protein, there are eight important amino acids which can't be synthesised throughout the body and subsequently must come from the weight loss plan. These are: isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. As well as arginine and histidine are amino acids required by infants and younger kids which helps their speedy development. Antioxidant A substance or nutrient which helps to guard our cells from injury caused by free radicals, damaging molecules that are present in pollution and tobacco smoke.


Our bodies also produce free radicals as a part of the normal biochemistry of living. Deficiency A scarcity of essential macronutrients or micronutrients which results in malnutrition and or illness. This may be the result of insufficient intakes or absorption points related to gastrointestinal illness. There are a variety of recognised deficiency diseases including (but not solely): scurvy (vitamin C deficiency)
